Ewe Got it Farm evolved from a need to meet multiple responsibilities placed on me. Of primary importance was the need to manage a native grassland prairie in a responsible manner. Native grasses need to grow tall and then be grazed briefly and allowed to grow tall again. Since Buffalo no longer roam from Canada to Texas and Back to Canada again, we must graze these grasslands with fewer or smaller animals that we can continually rotate from one pasture to the next. If we don't move them, the grasses disappear. If we don't graze, diversity can't be maintained and brush will take over. The easiest solution was just to by stocker calves, let them graze for a season, then sell and start over after everything grows back. But, I was also frustrated by the quality of lamb meat in stores. Too often I would buy expensive meat only to have it taste like old, rangey sheep. I also liked the idea of providing both meat and luxurious fiber and hopefully supporting local fiber artists. So we raise a fine wool merino type production sheep with exceptionally lean clean tasting meat. These are hardy sheep that thrive on native grasslands. For diversity we are also engaged in fruit production. Currently we have pears, pomegranates, and figs. We are currently testing the possibility of growing pine nuts, and hope to open a farm store and cafe to sell our products, those of other small producers, and the artistic production of our customers.
