About Shepherds Ledge
Shepherds’ Ledge began as A4 Farm in Limestone and was relocated to a picturesque 330-acre property in Monticello, Maine, in June of 2021. Family owned and operated, the farm is home to approximately 800 sheep of varying ages. The Albers family raises Katahdin/Dorper cross sheep and added Romanov to the mix in 2022. These breeds are hair sheep and are specifically raised for meat production. This cross generally produces mild-flavored lamb that is second to none, and no shearing or tail docking is necessary for their care. The farm utilizes an intensive rotational grazing system, moving the flock in separate groups every day during the grazing season. Most of their lamb is sold to larger markets but can also be purchased as whole or half animals and butchered locally. Breed stock is also available for sale. There are three generations working at Shepherds’ Ledge together. The Albers family includes Rob and Erin Albers and their children; Connor (20) and Samantha (17). Both were homeschooled and have been assisting their parents with the animals, infrastructure, and other farm duties, since they moved to Maine in 2015. Erin’s parents have moved to a small corner of the farm as well, joining the family business. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, the Albers love being able to call Maine “home”. Recently, the family acquired a sawmill and have started a side-business cutting pallet slats and taking custom lumber orders. They have focused mainly on working with maple, spruce, and tamarack, but have possible access to other types of logs as well. As a by-product, the Albers also sell scrap from the mill for firewood, turning blanks, and sawdust for livestock bedding or soil improvement.
