About Harrisdale Farmstead
In 2014 Ardyth and Gil Gillespie “retired” to the farmstead where her family had founded and since the early 1900s. Building on both our early year farming experiences and our long-time professional interests in promoting healthful eating and systems of producing food that benefit the farmers, processors, citizens and rural communities, we started a small scale enterprise for growing produce for local consumption, selling directly to consumers, including through our local farmers' market. On about 2 acres of sloping land which was once cattle and hog lots we established an experimental permaculture-style planting of mixed fruit and nut trees along eight swales (a type of terrace) constructed. In the alleys between the swales we planted perennials like berry bushes, raspberries, strawberries, and asparagus as well as making growing beds for produce. We also added bees and a small flock of sheep, currently 19 ewes of the Katahdin hair sheep breed. During the growing season we graze the sheep rotationally on the open areas and groves of three farmsteads. With increasing age our capacities have diminished, so we have scaled back our current commercial focus to pastured lamb, but we also have some asparagus in the spring. We are collaborating with our friends at Brun Ko Farm in making the lamb meat available locally.
