About DeKalb County Community Gardens
DeKalb County Community Gardens (DCCG) empowers people to access healthy and sustainably grown foods and addresses the root causes of hunger. DCCG was started in 2012 by Dan Kenney to help end hunger and food insecurity in DeKalb County, IL. Since our beginning, DCCG has distributed more than 1,000,000 pounds of food to our neighbors with food insecurity. DCCG has grown and distributed over 275,000 pounds of fresh produce in its gardens, managed mainly by volunteers. The produce grown in these gardens has been distributed throughout the entire county. In 2015, the Walnut Grove Vocational Farm (WGVF) began training individuals with developmental disabilities; they receive education in agriculture and horticulture, and transferable life skills emphasizing individual growth. Opportunities provided at WGVF allow all who participate to contribute and connect to the broader community in healthy, fun, integrated and meaningful ways. Over 80 individuals are served at WGVF each year. In 2017, the Grow Mobile program was launched with a “seed grant” from the American Public Health Association, AETNA Insurance, and the American Association of Counties. The Grow Mobile, a refrigerated truck, delivers fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, and non-perishable items throughout the county. There are between 12 and 14 events each month. In 2019, DCCG hired a School Garden Coordinator to teach educational classes at the DeKalb elementary and middle school gardens. The coordinator creates curriculum that is in line with state standards. For many students, this is their first time being in a garden. In January 2020, the Genoa Area Community Food Hub opened. The Genoa Hub is a multi-purpose space that includes, under one roof, a food pantry, a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen for nutrition and cooking education/demonstrations, rental/incubator space for small and start-up food-related enterprises, monthly, pay-as-you’re-able dinners that nourish DeKalb County residents from all walks of life.
