About Sunken Seaweed

Sunken Seaweed was founded in 2017 by two marine ecologists, Torre and Leslie, who, while doing intertidal field work along California’s North coast, saw first-hand the near total collapse of an entire kelp forest ecosystem. From that experience, the pair decided to forge a career out of restoring ocean ecosystems through farming the world's most sustainable crop, seaweed. Seaweed farming requires no arable land, no pesticides, herbicides, and no fresh water. For every 4 pounds of seaweed they grow, 1 pound of CO2 is sequestered, making it the most climate- friendly form of farming to date. The more seaweed they grow, the more we can reduce our carbon footprint and provide nutritional, regenerative foods. In addition to the many planetary benefits to seaweed farming, this crop can also offer human health boosts, as it is an incredible source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and bioavailable compounds. The diversity of seaweeds grown by Sunken Seaweed also offer tremendous versatility in terms of flavor profiles. The Dulse is smoky and incredibly bacon- like, the Nori is delicate and nutty, the Sea Lettuce is vibrant and vegetal, and the Sea Truffle rivals its land-based namesake with its intense pungent umami flavor and tingly finish. Sunken Seaweed hopes to someday see seaweed as an everyday staple across households in America. As a company, Sunken Seaweed makes every effort to expand on the triple bottom line principle, prioritizing ocean health and social justice above all. They engage with researchers and NGO’s from top institutions to study the ecosystem services of seaweed farms. They also engage many stakeholders and prospective farmers at outreach events, and even help organize the California Seaweed Festival. At the Humboldt County Farmers markets we sell seasonal fresh seaweed, which makes an amazing addition to any dish! you will also be able to buy our whole leaf dried seaweeds and line of seaweed flakes any time of year.
